Die Casting Comparison of Zinc Parts and Aluminum Parts

Die Casting Comparison of Zinc Parts and Aluminum Parts. Kinetic Die Casting Company produces parts for our customers in two types of metals. Aluminum and Zinc alloys. Most of the parts we produce are in aluminum.

When we get a quote request that does not specify the materiel, we ask a few questions to determine which metal would be better for them.

  1. Does weight matter? Zinc weighs about two and half (2.44) times more than aluminum. In other words, a part that weighs five (5) pounds in aluminum will weigh over twelve (12.22) pounds in zinc.
  2. Do you need EMI/RF shielding? Do you need electrical conductivity? Aluminum is much more electrically conductive than zinc, making it a better shield for RF/EMI.
  3. Do you need thermal conductivity? Aluminum is used by many manufacturers as a heat sink.
  4. Do you want parts with a highly polished finished surface? Zinc polishes very well, much better than aluminum.
  5. Do you need your parts plated? Zinc parts can be plated much better than aluminum.
  6. Are you intending to use the parts in a salt environment? Aluminum decays faster than zinc in a salty environment.

Die Casting Aluminum Parts Types

Die Casting Aluminum Parts Types. Die casting is the method that force melted metals like aluminum, zinc, lead, magnesium, and copper into pressured molds. This is the method that the majority companies would use in manufacturing parts that includes the identical dimensions to warrant that each and every component are high in excellence and contains a smooth surface with parts that are very much match with one another.

On the whole, aluminum parts types for die casting is accessible in two kinds which comprise of the methods cold chambered die casting machine and the hot chambered die casting machine. Any manufacturer has the freedom to make use of just one of them or they can also utilize both which may really vary depending on the desires. But even though these types can be utilized concurrently, they have different rewards. For example, manufacturers cannot actually employ hot chambered die casting machine when operating with aluminum given that cold chambered die casting machine is the only type that can be utilized for this procedure. But on the other hand, other metals can work well when done in hot chambered die casting machine aluminum parts types.

On the whole, aluminum parts type that will be utilized in a particular tool making process should be make certain first that it will match the metal that will be utilized. One cannot just choose cold chambered die casting machine without contemplating if the metal will match the method since there will be a conclusion on the end result. This is why, only knowledgeable workers should try die casting method.

Roofing Tile Molds as Die Castings

Roofing Tile Molds as Die Castings – One of the many products that Kinetic Die Casting Company has produced over the years is aluminum roof tile molds for companies that manufacture concrete roofing tile. I bring this up to discuss the limitations of Kinetic Die Casting Company’s manufacturing process.

Over a period of ten years, we produced over 100,000 of these aluminum roof tile molds in various styles. These parts ranged in weight of about three pounds to eight pounds and in size from a width of 8″ to 14″ and a length of 14″ to 17″. These are the largest parts our die casting machines will handle. We could produce these molds at a rate of 500 parts a day. We are happy to accept purchase orders of fewer than 200 parts.

We no longer make these roof tile molds. The company we made these parts for was sold and the new owner uses a different manufacturing process.

If you are looking for a part larger than 17″ or heavier than about 10 pounds, we cannot help you.

For parts smaller than these roof tile molds, we are very competitive and we can produce the parts for you rapidly. In most cases, we run production orders of fewer than 500 parts a day. Smaller parts we can produce over 1000 parts a day as our customers need them.

Finding the Right Aluminum Parts Types

Finding the Right Aluminum Parts Types. Quite a lot of metals or alloys could be utilized in the die casting method, such as zinc, copper, magnesium and aluminum. Among these materials, loads of equipment manufacturers are inclined to favor die castings for aluminum parts types. Preference to aluminum in die casting parts is now most distinct in the automotive industry where aluminum parts rank only second to steel. Advantages obtainable by aluminum parts types are many. Foremost is this alloy’s flexibility which allows its applications to a variety of designs in the die casting methods. Aluminum’s flexible characteristic jibes well with the die casting technology which requires high-pressure injection of melted metal into dies or molds which allow competent mass production of equipment or machine parts.

Another benefit is aluminum’s electrical conductivity and heat-absorbent quality, making aluminum parts types appropriate in electronic equipment such as computers and refrigerators. Aluminum parts types are also lighter and better at resisting corrosion, qualities that have been proven helpful in such applications as light enclosures and housings uncovered to the weather.

Aluminum parts types produced through the die casting procedure can likewise be designed with surfaces replicating various textures. Created into casts for other products, aluminum castings could be designed to have smoother quality than most all other castings. With such a benefit, many companies manufacturing construction materials have turned to utilizing aluminum roofing tile molds for the design and fabrication of numerous roofing tiles. Furthermore, these aluminum parts types are lighter and more inexpensive than steel molds, advantages that interpret into cost-efficiency and better prosperity for the manufacturers.

Porosity in Aluminum Die Casting Parts

Aluminum Die Casting Parts Porosity – Porosity in Die Castings

There are many forms of Die Casting Porosity, many are caused by these die casting variables:

  • Metal Temperatures and Mold Temperatures.
  • Material Cleanliness.
  • Die Casting Mold Design.
  • Die Casting Part Design.
  • Die Casting Machine Pressures.
  • Die Casting Machine Shot Speed.
  • Die Casting Spray or Die Casting Mold Release.
  • Other forms of porosity can be from “shrinkage” or wall thickness.

What is Die Casting Porosity? In order for you to know what die casting porosity is, you need to know the die casting basics. The most common form of Die Casting Porosity is a kind of factory defect in which die cast parts contain small pockets of void space and air within the metal, causing it to become porous.

Porosity in Die Casting is the air trapped by the metal inside the die casting parts. To know more, a basic knowledge of the die casting process is necessary. Die casting is a process wherein a particular amount of molten metal is put inside a shot cylinder, then it is applied (plunged) with great force with a piston so as to force the metal into a die cast mold or die cast die. During this “plunging process”, air inside the cylinder is forced along with the metal into the die casting mold. It is a very fluid turbulent process. The air forced into the mold with the metal and the metal already inside the mold is forced out of the mold through a series of gates, vents and overflows.

After this, the metal is left to cool down and harden or freeze inside the mold. The metal is then removed as a die cast part. The same process is repeated over again.

Die casting companies use metals which are non-ferrous, or do not contain Iron, as this is the highest factor for oxidation and rusting. Several examples of non-ferrous metals include zinc, aluminum, lead, magnesium, tin and copper. Kinetic Die Casting only uses aluminum and zinc.

In the worst case, porosity in die casting parts, weakens die casting parts, if the voids or pockets are very large. Porosity typically matters most in pressure tight die casting parts. When the air escapes through a die casting part, it is typically caused by porosity.

Employees of Kinetic Die Casting are POROSITY EXPERTS in die casting parts that need to be free of porosity.
