Casting is the process of molding metals into different shapes and sizes to create metal parts. One of the oldest casting methods is gravity casting. Gravity casting uses gravity to make sure that all the parts of the mold is …

How Can Trim Dies Save Me Money on Die Casting Parts in 2023?
How Can Trim Dies Save Me Money on Die Casting Parts? – Is a question, I get asked frequently from potential customers and current customers.
I will discuss what a die casting part trim die is and what it does, but first we need to know a little about how die casting parts are made. The Die Casting Trim Die is part of the die casting part tooling package.
- Die Casting is a manufacturing process where a company melts metal, typically aluminum or zinc, and then injects that metal into a die or mold using extreme pressure.
The molten metal is under so much pressure that the metal “flashes” out around the edges of the part inside the die casting mold. This excess metal is also called “flash”. This flash is typically very thin, sometimes paper thin, wall of metal. The flash is frequently sharp and can cut fingers if not handled carefully. After the part cools sufficiently, the flash must be removed before we can ship the die cast part to our customer.
- The most common ways to remove flash are:
- Using a file or sander – Somewhat labor intensive and subject to “artistic interpretation” from the worker. Not always consistent in the process.
- Using a trim die – A trim die cuts consistently .005″ to .010″ close to edge of the die casting part like a cookie cutter. Is also the fastest way to remove flash.
The trim die is in two parts and each half is bolted on either the upper or lower platen of a trim press. The trim press has typically 15 to 20 tons of closing pressure. The press raises and lowers as the worker actuates the buttons. The die casting part fits perfectly in the trim die bottom, the trim die top half closes on the part and uses a cutting edge to cut the excess metal (flash) away from the part.
Because the trim die cuts the flash from the part accurately and consistently, the part quality is always better when a trim die is used to remove the a flash. So, less money is wasted on poor part quality. The trim press also operates faster than the die casting machine so the flash removal takes less time and labor, thus saving money in part production.
Each of our die casting production cells at Kinetic Die Casting Company has at least one trim press to accommodate a trim die for every die casting production part order. Every customer who owns a trim die, saves money on their part price. Call us today for a FREE competitive part price proposal to make your parts 818-982-9200.

Die Casting Tooling in 2022
Die Casting Tooling. Die casting is an industrial process used by manufacturers which involves forcing melted metal into Die Casting Tooling or also known as molds under extremely high pressure. This process is commonly used in cases where a manufacturer would need a large quantity of small-sized or medium-sized parts. This process can make use of ferrous metals but it usually uses nonferrous materials such as copper, zinc, aluminum, and magnesium among other metals. Die casting is a great process to use where the manufacturer needs to maintain a smooth surface, good quality of parts, and a fairly uniform outcome for each part. There is little or sometimes no need for post-production machining to uniform the parts.
There are two ways to achieve this process; the first is to use the hot chambered machine and the second is to use the cold chambered machine. The former is used for metals with lower melting points and can fill in the cavities of Die Casting Tooling faster compared to the latter. However, there are metals that hot chambered machines cannot handle so cold chambered machines are used in their place.
When it comes to Die Casting Tooling, there are different sizes and shapes to choose from. There are also different styles to use and the cost will vary based on the simplicity or complexity of the mold. They are built usually from hardened steel which takes a lot of time to finish. This is the main part of the whole die casting process and is the most important part.

Die Cast Tooling Mold Bases in 2021
Kinetic Die Casting owns several Die Casting Tooling Mold Bases that we use to produce aluminum die casting parts. These die cast mold bases are convenient for use for customers who own die casting tooling inserts but not a die cast mold base to use in a die casting machine. Some of the moldbases we own are as small as 12″ by 12″ and are as large as 36″ by 36″. Kinetic Die Casting also owns DME unit dies and MUD bases. DME unit dies are available in many sizes. Kinetic Die Casting primarily uses two DME Unit Die sizes:
- 10″ x 12″ DME Unit Die
- 12″ x 15″ DME Unit Die
Kinetic Die Casting will mount “customer owned” die cast tooling inserts into our mold bases so we can produce aluminum die casting parts. We can mount inserts ranging in sizes from 3″ to 20″ and all sizes in between. If a customer contacts us and they own die casting tooling inserts only, we can make parts for them. We have also made die cast tooling inserts for customers that will fit our mold bases. The tooling inserts are many types, like:
- Guitar Amplifier Housings
- Chocolate Fountain Heaters
- Golfing Products
- Aluminum Boxes
- Aluminum Heatsinks
- Aluminum Hardware
- Military Parts
- Aluminum Auto Parts
- Aluminum Aircraft Parts
Die Casting Tooling is the greatest cost barrier to producing aluminum die cast Custom Metal Parts. The die cast die mold base is a very large percentage of the die cast tool cost. Kinetic Die Casting uses our die casting mold bases to save money for our customers, so they can get the die casting parts they need.

Aluminum Die Cast Tooling in 2021
Aluminum Die Cast Tooling. Aluminum die casting is a metalworking process mainly used to create several small to medium sized parts. This process results in parts with the almost exact same dimensions, smooth surface finish and with incredibly high detail. The process of aluminum die casting typically involves molten metal to be forced into molds under high pressure to create each part. Then, they are machined into dies. Common metals used for this process are non ferrous metals such as tin, copper, magnesium, zinc, lead and aluminum; although ferrous materials can also be used. Due to the versatility of this process, it has become one of the highest volume of products made in the industry.
The first of the Die Cast Tools used in this process is known as the die cast tooling or die cast mold. This mold is made from strengthened steel and can come in several shapes and sizes. They are available in single cavity, where one part is created per cycle, and multiple cavity, where several parts are created in a single cycle. These molds and tooling can cost for as low as a few hundred dollars for the simpler molds and would cost several thousand dollars for larger and complex molds.
Other Aluminum Die Cast Tools used for the process of die casting are the machinery; namely the gooseneck machine or hot chambered machine and the cold chambered machine. These machines have different advantages as well as advantages and it would depend upon what metal is being used to determine which machine is to be used.
