Die casting tools, more commonly called dies for short are usually composed of steel alloy tools that can be divided into two parts: (1) the fixed die, or cover half, and (2) the ejector die half. This arrangement allows for the removal of the castings after the whole process.

Contemporary dies feature mobile slides, or other sections to generate threads, holes and other preferred shapes while casting. For instance, the Sprue holes located in the fixed die half permit the molten metal to go into the die and successfully fill up the cavity. The use of the ejector die half is that it often contains the runners or passageways and gates or inlets that connect the molten metal into the cavity. The typical die includes ejector pins that allow removal of the cast par, locking pins that lock the two die halves into place, and a series of openings or holes for the lubricant and coolant.

Four types of dies are generally available. These are (1) Single cavity dies that are able to produce one part; (2) Multiple cavity dies that generate many identical parts; (3) Unit dies that produce different parts in one go; and (4) Combination dies that can make various parts suited for an assembly.

Hot-chamber machines works to feed the die by relying on a pool of molten metal. With the start of each cycle, the machine piston is withdrawn and allows the molten metal to rapidly fill the gooseneck. This is also the reason why this is also called a gooseneck machine. The piston, either powered by oil or gas, then pushes the molten metal out of the gooseneck and directly into the die. This system is preferred because of the relatively fast and rapid cycle times it is able to accomplish and the ease by which the metal is conveniently melted within the casting machine. Because the system cannot employ metals with high melting points, and since it cannot also employ aluminum because of its ability to absorb some of the iron in the cast, the hot-chamber machines usually uses tin, zinc and lead based alloys.

Die casting parts: The steps involved in the process of die casting. During the die casting process, these are the basic steps that are being followed.

The first part involves spraying the mold with lubricant. This enhances the removal of the casting later on, and at the same time helps control the temperature of the die. The mold is then closed and then molten metal is introduced into the die under high pressures ranging from 1,500 to 25,000 psi. The die is then filled completely, and the pressure is constantly checked and maintained until the casting has securely solidified. The die is then opened, and the shot are then ejected by the use of ejector pins. Shots differ from castings since there are a number of multiple cavities within a die, producing multiple castings in one shot. Ultimately, the scraps are separated from the casting. Scraps include the gates, sprues, runners and flash. The scraps are usually removed by the use of a special trim die located inside a hydraulic or power press.

A more conventional method is employed by separating the scraps by sawing or by hand. This often requires grinding in order to smoothen out the scrap marks. Scraps that come off from this process are usually recycled by re-melting and are then used up again in another die casting process.
