Alcastco Diecasting is closing

May 13, 2013 – Alcastco Diecasting is closing. The management of Alcastco Die Casting Company, has announced that they will be closing by next month, June 2013.

They were located at 9180 San Fernando Road in Sun Valley California, just two miles away from Kinetic Die Casting Company.

Kinetic Die Casting offered positions to many of the Alcastco Diecasting employees.

Alcastco was known as one of the two least expensive die casting companies in Southern California. It looks like the ownership of Alcastco ran out of money.

Alcastco Die Casting Company

Alcastco Die Casting Company was established and has been at its current location since 1995. Alcastco was the former Kwick Cast Die Casting Company, and they located at 9180 San Fernando Road in Sun Valley California, just two miles away from us, Kinetic Die Casting Company. Many of the Alcastco Diecasting employees stayed with the company when it transferred from Kwickcast to Alcastco almost 20 years ago.

Alcastco primarily produces outdoor light products, their two largest customers are competitors in the outdoor lighting field: Kim Lighting Company and Sun Valley Lighting Company.

Alcastco produces parts in aluminum, brass and zinc. Brass (#1) and aluminum (#2) being the most of their business and then zinc (#3). They die cast zinc using cold chamber die casting machines.

Alcastco was known throughout Southern California as one of the two cheapest or least expensive if you prefer, die casting companies around. But, it looks like the ownership of Alcastco ran out of money, just conjecture on my part. Yesterday, I learned from the management of Alcastco that they will be closing their doors by the end of May or June 2013.

It is sad to me that another Southern California Manufacturing company is closing. I will personally miss Alcastco Die Casting Company and their competitive fighting spirit.

Best regards,

Bob Thomas

Metal Die Cast in the Cold Chamber

Metal Die Cast in the Cold Chamber. In the field of metallurgy, the cold chamber method is known as one of the two chief types of die casting processes. The other one is called the hot chamber method. If you noticed sculpted metal parts with a high melting point, they are in all probability fashioned by a cold chamber machine. Cold chamber die castings could be created out of aluminum, magnesium die casting, and copper.

These cold chamber die castings go through outside furnaces. The metals are then poured into a cold chamber in the machine. The cylinder and plunger are not submerged in liquefied metal as is the method with low melting point metal alloys in a hot chamber method. These enormous machines use hydraulic power to force the poured metal into the die mold. It is a slower procedure but the machines utilized for cold chamber die castings usually last longer. This and its capability to manufacture metals with a high melting point into exactitude parts make it helpful for machinists, metallurgists, metalworkers, engineers, and manufacturers of our modern gadgets like aluminum die cast boxes that are utilized in electrical outlets and other such electrical fixtures.

Die casting is only one of the procedures utilized to shape metal to our wants. There is also forging, rolling, sintering, machining, fabrication, metalworking, and numerous other different casting procedures. Then there are the practices of fusing one metal to another which are soldering, welding, and brazing. There are also other procedures such as annealing, tempering, quenching, plating, thermal spraying, and case hardening. All these metalworking methods have given to the development of our world as we know it today.

Die Casting Company Closures 2012

14 January 2013 – There were 38 Die Casting Companies in Southern California in 1994. Kinetic Die Casting Company was founded in 1994.

From 1994 to 2013 is 19 years. That period of time seems like a long term or a short term, depending on your frame of reference. For a house pet 19 years is a long time. For a manufacturing company, 19 years is just getting into a healthy stride. Manufacturing companies depend on job-shop manufacturing companies, such as Kinetic Die Casting Company, to make their aluminum and zinc parts. Die Casting is essential in producing manufacturing metal parts.

On Monday, December 20th, 2010, I wrote an article because I was shocked at the closure of another die casting company competitor, 12 closed die casting companies since Kinetic Die Casting was founded in 1994. The article was titled:

Why did these California Die Casting Companies Close

https://www.kineticdiecasting.com/kdc/why-did-these-california-die-casting-companies-close/

Now, two (2) years later the list has grown by another six (6) die casting companies. Six company closures in two years is very significant. Since 1994, there are 18 Die Casting Companies that are gone in the last 19 years. Many of these companies were 30 to 50 years old. These companies are listed below:

  1. AQ Die Casting Company, Chatsworth California.
  2. C&D Die Casting Company, Chatsworth California.
  3. Chapman Die Casting Company, City of Industry California.
  4. Coast Die Casting Company, Gardena California.
  5. Commercial Die Casting Company, Vernon California.
  6. Compu Die Casting Company, Compton California.
  7. Del Mar Die Casting Company, Gardena California.
  8. Die Cast Manufacturing Company, Bloomington California.
  9. Drumheller Industries, Sun Valley California.
  10. Kim Lighting Die Casting, Ontario California.
  11. Lansco Die Casting Company, City of Industry California.
  12. Los Angeles Die Casting Company, Commerce California.
  13. Modern Die Casting Company, Paramount California.
  14. Pomona Die Casting Company, Pomona California.
  15. Royal Die Casting Company, Burbank California
  16. Spencer Die Casting Company, Vernon California.
  17. Team Quick Die Casting, Compton California.
  18. Universal Die Casting Company, Los Angeles California.

Of the remaining 21 die casting companies, some are doing very well, while others will probably die off in the next two years. Kinetic Die Casting Company, is one of the healthier companies because we are growing while others are declining.

I do not believe that these 18 missing manufacturing company suppliers should be easily forgotten. People lost jobs. People lost hope. California has a weaker economy because these 18 manufacturing supplier companies are gone or absorbed. I am sorry to see the passing of these great companies.

Aluminum Parts Types – Their Roles in Welding

Aluminum Parts Types – Their Roles in Welding. Have you ever heard of welding? The welding industry is expanding fast and the requirements for the materials are also getting harder. It is in this sense that the welding companies notice the value of aluminum and its alloys. Essentially, the aluminum parts types are reasonably agreeable when it comes to welding metalwork pieces. Aluminum is after all is thought to be one of the finest metals to use because of its fluidity during the heating procedure. Even when a much lower or a comparatively higher temperature is used, there is in truth no problem in dealing with the aluminum and its alloys.

Aluminum contains properties that respond successfully in the welding method. It simply melts and then never fractures even after hardening. The process of aluminum welding is performed depending on the aluminum parts types. Several of these parts are those that include the so called commercial grade aluminum which are compressed with about 99% of purity. As a result, the effects of the heat treatment differ as well. Those that contain lead or copper in them are too tough to weld and typically end up fracturing during the procedure of welding.

The welding process of the aluminum parts types comprise the TIG and MIG along with the other customary techniques of resistance welding, plasma, gas, and utilization of insulated electrodes. TIG is the approach used in creating the fine surface finishes and in the welding of pipes and repairing the castings. In the meantime, the MIG technique suits the welding of thicker aluminum metal pieces that entail a longer welding cycle.
