Drumheller Industries is Closed (Die Casting Company)
Drumheller Industries is Closed (Zinc Die Casting Company) – Today I drove past the building of Drumheller Industries on 10967 Tuxford Street in Sun Valley, California. I was saddened that the building is for sale. Drumheller Die Casting Company was a zinc die casting company that was in business over 40 years. Scott Drumheller, the last owner of the company, told me his grandfather started the company by building special hot chamber zinc die casting machines. These machines will cast and trim the zinc die casting parts automatically so that the parts drop into buckets.
For over two years, I talked to Scott about the possibility of purchasing his company. He has had declining sales and fewer customers every year. The value of his company was dropping. Unfortunately, Scott felt he needed a job but did not want to work for another die casting company. He wanted to continue Drumheller operations until he had to stop.
In July 2012, Scott Drumheller told me he needed to pay either a penalty or a fine to the state of California to stay in business. This fee was vary large, and amounted to more than 10% of his annual sales. He decided to close Drumheller Industries unless someone would purchase his corporation from him and his liability to the state of California.
I offered to pay him a sales commission and two or three times the value of his equipment for his equipment and his customers. He insisted that the corporation ownership needed to be part of the package. I do not understand how it could benefit him to scrap his equipment for one third of the amount of money that I offered to pay him and why he believed I would take his corporate liabilities or even why he thought it was fair to insist the corporate transfer as part of the package. We could not come to an agreement and he chose to scrap his equipment instead of selling the die casting machines to Kinetic Die Casting Company.
Another California Die Casting Company has closed. This is very sad to me. There are less than one third of the die casting companies in California as there were 20 years ago.
The good news to me is that my company, Kinetic Die Casting Company, is thriving and growing while other companies are declining and closing. Our customers feel safe buying their parts from us. We purchased the mold bases and die casting tooling from the Drumheller die casting auction to service their customers.

Parting Line Flash on Die Casting Parts. What is Die Casting Parts Flash on the Parting Line?
Die Casting part tooling produces parts from two halves, (1.) the hot half and (2.) the ejector half.
Die Casting Mold Ejector Half

Where these two halves meet is called the “parting line”. The parting line on the die casting part is where most of the hand labor is expended. On occasion, parts need to be filed or sanded on the parting line. Many times, a trim die will cut the excess flash from the parting line like a cookie cutter.
Kinetic Die Casting Company produces many types of die casting parts. Most of these parts are cleaned by use of a trim die. The trim die can save as much as 15% of the part cost and reduce the part production time by half.

How Die Casting Part Prices are Established
Die Casting Part Pricing – How Die Casting Part Prices are Established.
Kinetic Die Casting Company has a specific pricing model that is similar and also different from our competitors. Here are a few issues to think about when asking for a die casting part price.
- Die Casting Part Size
- Die Casting Part Weight
- Die Casting Material Type
- Inspection Requirements
- Die Casting Part Quantity
- Die Casting Part Tolerances
- Die Casting Part Specifications
- Die Casting Tooling Types
- Additional Labor Needs
- Die Casting Part Secondary Finishing
- Other Fees
The die casting part size and weight effect the part price in a few ways, cycle times or parts per hour, the machine tonnage size required to produce the parts and the part material cost, which also relates to the die casting material type.
The inspection requirements can vary depending on if a (1) visual inspection, or a (2) dimensional inspection or a (3) penetration inspection or an (4) X-Ray inspection or a (5) pressure test inspection are required.
The part quantity has an effect because it will determine if some of the many “one time” or “minimum charge” fees are covered in the production lot.
Die casting part specifications and tolerances add additional labor to a simple casting through inspection and documentation.
The die casting tool can effect the part price by how many cavities are in the tool, how many slides are in the tool, whether additional labor can be removed by the tool, and also if a trim die is available. The mold type also has an effect in the set up time for tooling.
Many times additional labor are needed to complete the die casting part, like threading holes, which also adds to the part cost. Can we use high speed production machining or do we need to use CNC machines.
If there is a polish, ball burnish, bead blast, paint or anodize requirement, that will add to the part cost.
Other fees, some die casting companies charge a “Set Up Fees” or an “Environmental Fees” or an “Energy Surcharge Fees” or a packaging or pallet fee, we do not have any of these hidden fees.

Comparison of Die Casting Tooling Types
Die Casting Tooling Types – Kinetic Die Casting Company produces die casting tooling for may types of die casting products.
- Die Casting Inserts
- Die Casting Mold Bases
- Unit Die – Die Casting Tooling
- Complete Die Casting Tooling
- Die Casting Trim Die Tooling
Die Casting Inserts –
Typically the least expensive tool to buy to get die casting parts. The cost of an insert starts at about $6000 and could range upward to over $20,000. The inserts can weigh as little as 30 – 40 pounds or more than 100 pounds. And typically the die casting inserts are only 4″-6″ larger than the part that needs to be produced.
Die Casting Inserts need to be mounted into a Die Casting Mold Base. If the die casting part needs a slide or slides. The mold base could be more costly.
Die Casting Mold Bases –
The Die Casting Insert Tool is mounted into a mold base to make die casting parts. The mold base is very large (usually over 15 inches), heavy (usually over 1500 pounds) and expensive (usually over $4,000). The mold base is necessary to control the temperature and pressures in die casting. The mold base has a hole to allow the metal to be injected into the tool. The mold base has special clamping slots so it can be mounted into the die casting machine.
Unit Die – Die Casting Tools –
A special die casting tool that is used to reduce the cost from a complete die casting tool and more efficient than die casting insets is the unit die tool, sometimes called a DME unit die. The unit die tool is easier and faster to change out in a die casting machine. Sometimes as little as half an hour verses sometimes four hours as a complete tool, or six hours as a die casting insert. It requires that the die casting company have a master DME unit holder mounted in a die casting machine. The unit dies are universal in the die casting industry and can be moved from one die casting company to another easier, similar to complete tooling, than die casting inserts. Unit dies are produced in three sizes, depending on the size of the part to be produced. 10×12 (pronounced ten by twelve), 12×15 (pronounced twelve by 15), and 15×18 (pronounced fifteen by eighteen)
Complete Die Casting Tooling –
The best quality tool. The most expensive tool. The tool that is the easiest to move from one die casting company to another. This tool is the complete package, cavity inserts and mold base. It mounts directly into the die casting machine. It controls the temperature and pressure much better than it’s counterparts.
Die Casting Trim Dies –
A die casting trim die cuts the excess material around the die casting part (flash). The die casting trim die mounts in a hydraulic press and saves time and produces a better part than sanding parts.

Roofing Tile Molds as Die Castings
Roofing Tile Molds as Die Castings – One of the many products that Kinetic Die Casting Company has produced over the years is aluminum roof tile molds for companies that manufacture concrete roofing tile. I bring this up to discuss the limitations of Kinetic Die Casting Company’s manufacturing process.
Over a period of ten years, we produced over 100,000 of these aluminum roof tile molds in various styles. These parts ranged in weight of about three pounds to eight pounds and in size from a width of 8″ to 14″ and a length of 14″ to 17″. These are the largest parts our die casting machines will handle. We could produce these molds at a rate of 500 parts a day. We are happy to accept purchase orders of fewer than 200 parts.
We no longer make these roof tile molds. The company we made these parts for was sold and the new owner uses a different manufacturing process.
If you are looking for a part larger than 17″ or heavier than about 10 pounds, we cannot help you.
For parts smaller than these roof tile molds, we are very competitive and we can produce the parts for you rapidly. In most cases, we run production orders of fewer than 500 parts a day. Smaller parts we can produce over 1000 parts a day as our customers need them.
