Unit Die Tools
Kinetic Die Casting Company (kineticdc) makes aluminum parts and zinc parts using diecasting tooling aka die casting tooling or die casting molds. There are several possible items that fall under the heading as tooling. In the following weeks, I will be discussing the following terms used as die casting tooling:
– Complete Mold, Complete Die Casting Die
– Unit Die Tools (DME)
– Unit Die Holder
– Trim Die
– Cavity Inserts “Inserts”
– Mold base (moldbase)
Last week, I wrote about Complete Die Casting Molds. This week I write about:
Unit Die Tools for Die Casting
The terms “Unit Die” or “DME Die” are the terms used to indicate a tool that is part of a unit tool used to make die casting parts. The letters “DME” are for Detroit Mold Engineering, the original developers of the DME unit die tool. Similar to how some people refer to a “soda pop” as a “Coke”. The unit die typically consists of a set of cavity inserts mounted in the unit die. Typically, an ejector plate with ejector pins are part of the package. There are several sizes of Unit Die Tools, they are indicated by their dimensions (Height by Width). The most common sizes are 10×12, 12×15 and 15×18.
The DME unit die uses a master unit die holder to hold the tool in the die casting machine. Sometimes, the maser holder remains in the die casting machine making the die casting mold changeover time faster. The master unit die holder has the clamping rails needed to mount the tool in the die casting machine. The master holder also has the shot hole for the shot sleeve.
The tooling cost for a Unit Die Tool is usually less expensive than a complete mold because it needs less steel and uses the rails and shot hole in the master unit die holder. The die casting company will usually own the various sizes of master unit die holders.

A Complete Die Casting Mold
The terms “Complete Mold” or “Complete Die” are the terms used to indicate a tool that is complete and ready to make die casting parts. The complete die casting tool fits, “as is”, into the die casting machine. This complete mold consists of a set of cavity inserts mounted inside a mold base. The moldbase has a shot hole to accommodate the shot sleeve (the tube used to inject molten metal). The moldbase also has rails so the the mold can be clamped into the die casting machine. The moldbase also has an ejector plate with ejector pins to “eject” the die casting part from the die casting tool. Inside the mold base are cavity inserts that provide the mirror image of the shape of the final die casting part. These inserts are heat treated to a greater hardness so they can withstand the higher heat and higher pressure of injected molten metal.

Kinetic Lighting Parts
The aluminum die casting manufacturing process is quite similar to permanent mold casting. Both processes start out by melting or liquefying the aluminum, that is going to be used. The melted materials will then be injected into die cast molds castings. The liquid will then take the form of the patterns in the mold castings. The molds will then be allowed to cool down to harden and once they are opened, the product is finished. The difference between die casting and permanent mold casting is that the former uses high amounts of pressure in the molds so that the material will get into every part of the cavity. This results in better quality of the products which is why die casting is chosen to make Aluminum Lighting Fixtures.
Also, Aluminum Lighting Fixtures help in illuminating man made structures such as houses, buildings, tunnels as well as the streets at night. They are an essential part of these structures and a lot of them are needed. By using the die casting process, the bulk orders for these Aluminum Lighting Fixtures are met. Not only that, quality and consistency is insured by die casting. This is a cost efficient and effective way of producing Aluminum Lighting Fixtures.
Furthermore, Aluminum is a great choice for lighting fixtures as they are strong and can last a very long time. They are also very lightweight compared to other metals. Since they can be harvested almost anywhere, they are very cheap too.

Tooling Used in Die Casting
Die Casting Tooling. Aluminum die casting is a manufacturing process used to fulfill orders for large quantities of small to medium sized metal parts. This dependable process is used for high volume products made by the metalworking industry.
Die Casting Tooling
This process called die casting starts off with molten metal. The molten metal is then forced into the Die Casting Molds in a high pressure environment. After which, they are then machined into dies. This process results in the metal parts to be consistent in their dimensions, with high quality and good detail. For most of the time, die casting makes use of non ferrous metals such as tin, aluminum, zinc and copper among others but ferrous metals can also be used in this process. However, harder and stronger metals such as steel and iron cannot be used in this process; instead they are used to make Die Casting Molds.
These die casting molds come in a number of different shapes and sizes. Some can be made as single cavity molds which can make one part for every cycle or multiple cavity molds which can make several parts in a single cycle. Their shape and design would determine the cost of these molds; the more complex the design then the higher the cost of the mold would be. They can be very expensive, ranging from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars per mold.
