Fire at Kinetic Die Casting Company
Today, January 17 2011 at 8AM, we had a fire at Kinetic Die Casting Company. Everyone was in the lunch room for a company staff meeting. We completed the discussion on “Forklift Safety” for driving, moving pallets and things not to do with a forklift. “Waste of Waiting” was the next topic, where we discussed getting our production parts quicker to our customers by not waiting for processes. We were just in the middle of a contest and discussing the 7 Wastes in manufacturing. Half of the employees had already won a soda for naming four of the seven wastes.
Suddenly someone yelled “There is a fire in the die casting area”.
Fires occur frequently enough in a die casting company, that we know what to do. We ran back to the die casting area and saw that roof was on fire above die casting production cell number two. There was an area of about three feet by three feet blazing ferociously over the production cell number two melting furnace. Three people grabbed fire extinguishers and someone turned off the gas off to the die casting furnace. There was a great deal of excitement for about 20 minutes. Our continuous safety training saved the die casting building.
After the excitement, we resumed our production improvement meeting. The goal is long term improvements to Kinetic Die Casting Company without getting side tracked by other issues.

Kinetic Die Casting Company is doing very well. A few other of these die casting companies are doing well but many of these companies are nearly out of business. Two “die casting companies” on this list are down to a “one man operation” while a some others only have a few employees that are called in to work when a new purchase order arrives. A few of these companies are barely making the monthly payroll and utilities expenses. In fact, one of these companies will produce parts in exchange for metal, because they are COD with their metal supplier and they do not have the cash to buy materials to supply their other customers with parts.
If you are a buyer of die casting parts, consider this:
- If the die cast parts you are buying are more expensive everywhere else you look, your die casting supplier is hurting and may go out of business.
- If your die casting supplier does go out of business, how do you get your die cast tooling?

Where did you go? I knew you for over 20 years. My company, Kinetic Die Casting Company, ran die cast parts for your company, Die Cast Manufacturing Company, a few times. Your company ran parts for my company also. I drove by your building 12/16/2010 to wish you a Merry Christmas 2010, but your business is gone. Your company is closed and you left no forwarding address. I was told by your neighbors that you have been closed for almost a year. Before you closed, your electricity was shut off and you ran your die casting machines using a diesel generator. That when you closed, you cut up and scrapped your prized 1400 ton Harvil Die Casting Machine.
What happened? Why did you not call me? Were your die casting part prices too cheap? Did the cheap import die casting part prices close you? Did the economy close you? Did the increasing California Workers Compensation cost close you? Did the increasing California business regulations costs close you? Are you closed for good? How do your customers contact you? Where is their die cast tooling? Why did you not call me for help?
As you can see, I have several questions that I cannot ask you. You did not tell me how to contact you. I am sure that there are several customers that want to know where their tooling is, and how they can get die casting parts.
I am going to contact several common friends and suppliers to see if I can find you and help you if I can. If you see this open letter on my blog, please call me.

This job will pay from $8 – $12, based on experience and abilities. When hired, paid holidays and health care will be provided.
