Monitor Dynamics Die Castings
A customer of ours, in the early 1990’s, contacted Kinetic Die Casting Company, to send us their die casting tooling so we could produce an aluminum die casting enclosure housing for them. This company, Monitor Dynamics Incorporated (MDI), produced a security card reader system used in government buildings. MDI was well known for their high quality security systems. MDI demanded high quality products from their suppliers.
This aluminum die casting part had transformed many times from its inception. It started out as a steel box that was welded together. The design was simple, ¼ inch plates welded together in a box shape with a slot to slide electronic cards through and an area for a keypad. The next change was to make aluminum sand castings in a similar design. Later, the delivery and quantity requirements for the programs required MDI to purchase die casting tooling and die casting parts from a competitor of ours.
Unfortunately, our competitor did not realize the important differences between aluminum sand casting parts and aluminum die casting parts. The part design was poorly planned in the following ways:
- The draft on the interior walls was not properly created, the parts has several drag marks and stuck too easily in the tool.
- The tooling die not include a mold base, it consisted of inserts only. This kept the customer captive to the poor quality die casting company, our competitor.
- The wall thicknesses of 1/4” or more, “for higher strength”. Greater wall thicknesses in die casting parts for greater strength is a misconception.
Here is how I helped MDI get good quality parts. First, I had my toolmaker fix the internal draft angle problems so the aluminum housing parts would no longer stick in the die casting tool. Secondly, I mounted the inserts into one of our many available mold bases so we could make good quality die casting production parts.
Then finally, we fought the production process to make good parts in spite of the problems and complications from the ¼” or greater wall thicknesses. There were many complications, such as, several sink marks or surface porosity from the metal wicking from thinner areas of the casting to the thicker areas. The casting would deform easily in the cooling process. The internal porosity from the thicker sections would also cause the paint and powder coating to bubble.
MDI was very pleased with the results we provided them. Their purchasing manager sent me a letter of appreciation. MDI is now known as Ameritron, Incorporated. You can read a copy of the letter of appreciation from the purchasing manager here..

Plastic Parts For Military
There many advantages of aluminum military parts over plastic parts. Being in the military force is a life-threatening job. Together with this risk is the honor of saving one’s territory, which is one of the reasons why a number of men choose this as their career path. However, their success does not depend on their skills alone. The equipment to be used should also be considered. Look at these Night Vision Goggles made by Kinetic Die Casting Company. We made over 200,000 sets of these aluminum military parts for our customer.
To help the military in fulfilling their goal, they should know the advantages of aluminum military parts over plastic military parts. Why? Plastic military parts may be cheaper, but it cannot match the advantages given by aluminum military parts. Aluminum military parts can withstand prolong stocking periods. When not in battle, the equipment tend to be stored in the barracks. Unfortunately, some of these fade quickly in terms of quality and usability. It is because some parts are made of a special plastic which is not capable of keeping its condition over time. Aluminum does this, even if exposed to strong chemicals. Moreover, plastic parts are highly vulnerable to damage due to strong impacts. For instance, a rifle had to be dropped. The damage it can give to an aluminum part would not be that severe, but it would be very different for a plastic military part.
These are only a few of the many advantages of aluminum die casting military parts over the plastic parts.

2019 Die Casting Competition
Hello Die Casters,
The North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) holds a contest every year for the best castings. We are a month out from castings being due for the 2019 International Die Casting Competition. Based on the discussion at the technical congress earlier this year, some winners may not be up to par with what Chapter 30 die casters are doing. It would be great to get castings from Chapter 30 die casters, so the judges can see the difference.
Spread the word about the die casting competition, so those die casters can enter their castings.
Submit by June 17, 2017
The following link contains the details and at the bottom of the page is the electronic entry form.
Castings need to be received by June 17.

YOUR OFFICIAL ENTRY TO THE 2019 DIE CASTING COMPETITION BEGINS HERE.
To be a winner in today’s economy, you must meet — and even exceed — expectations. In a competitive global market, customers take notice of the best. The North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) knows that competition improves the competitor. With its annual Die Casting Competition, it recognizes, rewards and publicizes the outstanding casting designs of the year. Each entry is judged on its design, quality, cost savings, ingenuity, innovation and industry-changing potential.
Winners will be featured in national industry magazines including Die Casting Engineer and will also be displayed at the 2019 Die Casting Congress & Tabletop in Cleveland, OH in October. Entering and winning is one of the best ways to gain visibility with leading decision-makers. How can you afford not to compete?
OFFICIAL ENTRY RULES
Any number of castings may be entered. Send a separate entry form for each casting or assembly of castings. As-cast part samples are REQUIRED with each entry form. The metal surface cannot be improved or concealed by tumbling, shot blasting, coating or other surface treatments. NADCA encourages sending secondary processed samples, but only in addition to the as-cast parts.
All castings submitted for the competition MUST have approval in writing from the customer stating their permission to enter their die cast part in the competition. Entrants may request that certain information, such as customer names, be withheld from public use in exhibitions, magazine articles and other publications.
Judging is conducted by an independent panel of experts from the die casting industry, with no ties to eligible companies. The four equally weighed criteria are ingenuity of casting/product design, overall quality, cost savings and market-expanding potential.
The competition is open to die castings in these categories:
Aluminum
• Aluminum under 1 pound
• Aluminum 1-to-10 pounds
• Aluminum over 10 pounds
• Aluminum structural/high integrity (squeeze, semi-solid, high vacuum)
• Aluminum any size with decorative finish

• Magnesium over .5 pounds
Zinc
• Zinc under 6 oz./non-electroplated
• Zinc over 6oz./non-electroplated
