Plastic Strength or Castings

Metal alloy die castings have several advantages over their plastic counterparts. Most manufacturers of automobiles, computers, aircraft and other modern devices have considered the use of die cast metal alloy parts for their final products. Plastic component parts only entertain a few parts in some of these industries. But how do die castings compare to plastic parts? This article will try to answer this question.

A380 aluminum die casting alloy is the most common aluminum die casting alloy. It has a ultimate tensile strength of 317 MPa (46 ksi) Plastic is one the most common manufacturing materials that are utilized for various products. However, component parts that are fabricated from plastics are not as durable as the metal castings. Plastic has a tensile strength of 55-75 MPa (11 ksi) . If you are going to compare this to metal, particularly the cast aluminum, you will find out that plastic has great chances of incurring damages. Aside from this, plastic deteriorates rapidly when consistently exposed to heat. Plastic parts are only applicable for final products that do not require too much application of stress.

On the other hand, die cast metal parts are sturdier than plastics. Metal alloys are more resistant to harmful contaminants and extreme weather conditions. They can even bar the unwanted radio frequencies and electromagnetic emissions in some devices. Metal castings are also known to be good electrical conductors; meaning, they are ideal for housing electrical junctions because the metal surfaces can be easily grounded.

Diecast Trim Dies

Kinetic Die Casting Company (kineticdc) makes aluminum parts and zinc parts using diecasting tooling aka die casting tooling or die casting molds. There are several possible items that fall under the heading as tooling. In the following weeks, I will be discussing the following terms used as die casting tooling:
– Complete Mold, Complete Die Casting Die
– Unit Die Tools (DME)
– Unit Die Holder
Die Casting Trim Dies
– Die Casting Cavity Inserts “Tooling Inserts”
– Mold base (moldbase)

Last week, I wrote about Die Casting Tooling Inserts.
This week I write about:

Die Casting Trim Dies
The die casting trim die saves time, labor and money making die casting parts. During the die casting manufacturing process, molten metal is forced into the die casting mold through the shot hole, this uses considerable temperature and pressure. The molten metal is forced into the die cavities. The gases escape ahead of the metal out gas vents. Where the metal enters the cavity is called the gate. The air and gas in the tool escapes out of the tool through over-flows and vents. There is also excess metal in holes and around the edges called flash. The flash, gates, vents and over-flows need to be removed from the casting. This can be labor intensive using files, drills, deburr tools and sanders. A trim die automates the trimming process.

This was a four part Die Casting Tooling Series:

  1. Complete Molds, Complete Die Casting Dies
  2. Die Casting Unit Die Tools (DME)
  3. Die Casting Cavity Inserts “Tooling Inserts”
  4. Die Casting Trim Dies

Last week, I wrote about Unit Die Tools for Die Casting. This week I write about:

Die Casting Tooling Inserts
The terms “Cavities” or “Inserts” are the terms used to indicate a tool that is the least part of a die casting tool used to make die casting parts. These tooling cavities are fitted into a holder, a unit die or a mold base, before the tool can be mounted in the die casting machine.

Please review my previous articles on “Complete Die Casting Dies” and “Die Casting Unit Die Tools” to see what I mean about mounting the mold into the machine.

The Cavity Insert Tool does not have an ejector plate or ejector pins. These items will need to be fabricated prior to fitting the inserts into the holder. Inserts are somewhat small, the most common size is 6×6 inches weighing less than 30 pounds. In comparison, a unit die weighs over 100 pounds and a mold base can weigh 2000 pounds. Purchasing Tooling Inserts is the least expensive avenue into getting die casting parts. The downside is the die casting supplier owns the holder required to make parts.

Next Thursday… Trim Dies
