Comparison of Die Casting Tooling Types
Die Casting Tooling Types – Kinetic Die Casting Company produces die casting tooling for may types of die casting products.
- Die Casting Inserts
- Die Casting Mold Bases
- Unit Die – Die Casting Tooling
- Complete Die Casting Tooling
- Die Casting Trim Die Tooling
Die Casting Inserts –
Typically the least expensive tool to buy to get die casting parts. The cost of an insert starts at about $6000 and could range upward to over $20,000. The inserts can weigh as little as 30 – 40 pounds or more than 100 pounds. And typically the die casting inserts are only 4″-6″ larger than the part that needs to be produced.
Die Casting Inserts need to be mounted into a Die Casting Mold Base. If the die casting part needs a slide or slides. The mold base could be more costly.
Die Casting Mold Bases –
The Die Casting Insert Tool is mounted into a mold base to make die casting parts. The mold base is very large (usually over 15 inches), heavy (usually over 1500 pounds) and expensive (usually over $4,000). The mold base is necessary to control the temperature and pressures in die casting. The mold base has a hole to allow the metal to be injected into the tool. The mold base has special clamping slots so it can be mounted into the die casting machine.
Unit Die – Die Casting Tools –
A special die casting tool that is used to reduce the cost from a complete die casting tool and more efficient than die casting insets is the unit die tool, sometimes called a DME unit die. The unit die tool is easier and faster to change out in a die casting machine. Sometimes as little as half an hour verses sometimes four hours as a complete tool, or six hours as a die casting insert. It requires that the die casting company have a master DME unit holder mounted in a die casting machine. The unit dies are universal in the die casting industry and can be moved from one die casting company to another easier, similar to complete tooling, than die casting inserts. Unit dies are produced in three sizes, depending on the size of the part to be produced. 10×12 (pronounced ten by twelve), 12×15 (pronounced twelve by 15), and 15×18 (pronounced fifteen by eighteen)
Complete Die Casting Tooling –
The best quality tool. The most expensive tool. The tool that is the easiest to move from one die casting company to another. This tool is the complete package, cavity inserts and mold base. It mounts directly into the die casting machine. It controls the temperature and pressure much better than it’s counterparts.
Die Casting Trim Dies –
A die casting trim die cuts the excess material around the die casting part (flash). The die casting trim die mounts in a hydraulic press and saves time and produces a better part than sanding parts.

Kinetic Die Casting Company makes Superior Quality Aerospace Die Castings.
Our customer recently sent us a die casting tool to produce die casting parts. He recently experienced a reject from his customer and he needed our help.
Honeywell Aerospace (aerospace company) uses a quality inspection document, EMS 230, to accept or reject high pressure die casting parts. Our customer supplied die casting parts to Honeywell and these castings were rejected for “Cold Shots”.
Cold Shots are imperfections in the metal flow into die casting parts due to the metal freezing or solidifying prior to the metal filling the die casting cavity. It usually happens when the metal flow is limited or the metal is not the proper temperature or the die casting mold is not the proper temperature. As a great quality die casting company, we solve these issues every week. We control the metal temperature with thermocouples and we control the die temperature in our die casting process.
It can also happen if the die casting tooling or the die casting part is poorly designed. The die casting process needs metal to flow rapidly into the die casting tool to make solid die casting parts. Design of the tool or part can limit that fluid process.
This is what happened in this case:
* The die casting tooling gates into a section of the die casting part of about 0.030″ thick wall thickness. This is thinner than recommended for the metal to flow into the die casting. This restricts the metal flow.
* There are sections of the die casting that are over .200″ thick. Consistent wall thicknesses are critical for sound die castings.
* The prior die casting company added overflows and vents that worked against each other by filling the tool from two or three directions. These gates, vents and overflows created turbulence in the shot process which cause the metal to cool prematurely.
What did Kinetic Die Casting Company do for our new customer?
* We made some fast tooling changes to improve the metal flow in the die casting tool.
* We made great quality die casting parts for our new customer.
* We did this in less than three weeks for our happy customer.

Delmar Die Casting Company Tooling
I have received several RFQ’s (requests for quote) from prior DelMar Die Casting Company customers lately. These RFQ’s are for zinc die casting parts. Delmar Die Casting Company left a large hole in the Southern California zinc die casting economy. Many of these prior Delmar Die Casting Company customers and potential Kinetic Die Casting Company customers have their die casting tooling in their possession. Not all the tools are what you would expect. Some are die casting tooling inserts and some are unit die tools.
I have visited some of these companies to inspect the die casting tools. In every instance, I am able to make parts using their die casting tools.
I have found that these customers typically need only a few zinc die casting parts a year. Some times a few hundred zinc parts or a few thousand zinc parts. It seems that the these customers have a need that other die casting companies are not willing to fulfill. I am happy to make the low quantities for these customers.
If you have your die casting tooling from Delmar Die Casting Company, and you need a local California zinc die casting source for zinc parts, contact me here at Kinetic Die Casting Company.

Commercial Die Casting 101: Tooling Made for Die Casting
Commercial Die Casting 101: Tooling Made for Die Casting. Nowadays, die casting is popular choice for metal-working in large scale productions. Modern automotive, aircraft and related industries require metal parts that are tough and durable. Die casting, other than being a shaping process, is inherently a metal treatment. The final product exhibits high yield and resistance to multi-directional loading. Here is a set of components and tooling made for die casting:
The most important elements in the method are the dies. A pair of cover and ejector halves is required to start the process. They contain the shape that the molten metal will follow. Unlike other types of casting, dies can produce very detailed pieces in just one processing. However, these parts must be kept clean and lubricated on every operation.
The cover die has an opening that receives the molten metal. It must be carefully lubricated so that the final product will be smooth. Another tooling made for die casting is the set of ejector pins, which are connected to the ejector die. They facilitate quick dropping of the solidified metal. In traditional methods like sand casting, you have to remove the final products from the mold manually.
Another important tooling made for die casting is the fluid line system. Water lines are used to feed water into the machine during compression. Water serves as lubricant and coolant to the contacting parts. Gas escape lines, on the other hand, allow gas to escape from the metal during shaping. If gasses are not allowed to escape, gas bubbles may be trapped in the finished product. Gas bubbles are indicators of high porosity, making the piece weaker to tensional stresses.

Brass Die Casting Swimming Pool Parts
Brass Die Casting Swimming Pool Parts. Brass die casting swimming pool parts are a very good choice when finding fixtures and accessories for your swimming pool. Whether you are looking to purchase ladder anchor sockets, anchor wedges, escutcheon plates, valve handles, valve caps, cap screws, nuts, link bolts, pool anchors and pool anchor covers, hardware made of brass will give you all your money’s worth. There are a lot of reasons why most pool builders and owners prefer brass parts.
The most glaring reason is of course the fact that brass is one of the metal alloys out there that are most resistant to corrosion. Needless to say, this is a very important factor you need to consider when looking for swimming pool parts. You need parts that will stand the test of time and water. Brass die casting swimming pool parts are your best options if you want quality, durability and longevity.
It’s no secret that rust and corrosion are among the worst enemies of pool owners. Brass parts will lessen these problems. So the next time you go looking for new parts, whether as replacements for already corroded parts or as new installments, always prefer brass die casting swimming pool parts over other metal alloys. There are a lot of options when it comes to finding the perfect brass pool parts. There is of course the nearest hardware store in your area. In many cases however, it’s pretty hard finding brass parts in brick and mortar establishments. When this is the case, you can always go look for the parts online.
